GERALD VAN DER KAAP

I WANT A PERMANENT WAVE is een aanvulling op het kunstwerk van GERALD VAN DER KAAP in het Station Europaplein van de Amsterdamse Metro, de Noord/Zuidlijn. Het doet je met andere ogen kijken naar het ondergrondse kunstwerk. Het onthult enkele van de inspiratie bronnen: de Griekse mythe over de ontvoering van prinses Europa, film-noir scènes van ontmoetingen en video optredens van de kunstenaar. Het is ook een pamflet over Art in Public Space. Beter gezegd, het Station Europaplein is Public Space Art. Het is immersieve kunst. Als je het station binnengaat via de trappen of de metro word je erin ondergedompeld, je ondergaat het geheel, het is een immersieve belevenis. En die belevenis is in twee opzichten uit te werken afhankelijk van je positie, het perspectief waaruit je het kunstwerk waarneemt. Enerzijds de waarneming van I WANT A PERMANENT WAVE staand op het perron: de graphics, de kleuren, het spiegelende effect van het zilver op de speciaal ontworpen glasplaten, een snoepje voor de ogen. Anderzijds de dromoscopische ervaring (Paul Virilio) vanuit de rijdende metro trein, je wordt als reiziger-kijker geprojecteerd in het kunstwerk. Je blik uit het raam van de trein wordt door de snelheid beïnvloed, je ziet de afbeeldingen, de graphics vanuit een bewegend perspectief.
De publicatie is een supplement, een voortzetting van het kunstwerk zelf.

I WANT A PERMANENT WAVE by GERALD VAN DER KAAP Apart from being a metro station, Europaplein Station in Amsterdam is also an immersive experience. When you enter the station, you find yourself inside a huge dromoscopic underground work of art.
You could say there are two artworks, to paraphrase Virilio, depending on your perception. One is the artwork at the station. You stand on the platform waiting, looking at it, the images, the graphics, the colors, the mirroring effect of silver. The other is the one you see riding the metro train, looking out of the window, it is moving and blending. You are now traveler-spectator, voyageur-voyeur, and the speed metamorphoses the artwork. Cinematic energy.
This book reveals some of the ideas behind this artwork: the Greek myth about the kidnapping of Europa, film-noir-style brief encounters and live video performances by the artist.
