Henk Chabot (1894 – 1949) preferred to retreat completely behind his work. His person, his life and his place in the history of art grow pale beside the metamorphoses that his painted figures undergo. Explain nothing. Set it down. Say it. Disappear. These sentences of Canetti might have been his motto. Although he was perhaps the most human of all painters, no surface of paint is more animal than his. If the membrane of his paintings reminds one of the skin of an animal, the eyes underneath will certainly be those of human beings. No wonder that he has been described as a not very accessible painter, that his way of working has given offence and has even been considered repellent; in fact his paint functions as an ambush from which we are watched.

This is a book full of clandistine glances and if it feels like a breach of propriety to leave it open, by the same token, one shuts it at one's own risk
